Composition is the art of arranging elements to suit one's personal taste. Since every individual is different, compositions will naturally vary from person to person. However, there are established rules in composition, such as the 'rule of thirds.' These guidelines are easily accessible, just a quick search away on your phone.
These rules were devised by those who deeply understood how humans perceive the world. When applied, they keep the frame from becoming chaotic, making it appear calm and stable. In short, they create a sense of balance.
Yet, we have become so utterly accustomed to these rules that we are unable to break free from them. Our vision has become confined. Everything is just too perfectly arranged.
They say rules are made to be broken, but breaking the rules of composition is extraordinarily difficult. This is because we are forced to work within the confines of a limited rectangular frame. But even without spatial constraints, we remain tethered to the innate laws of human perception.
If you are just embarking on the path of art, you must adhere to these fundamental rules. Only when you feel completely secure in the compositions of your own work should you begin to dismantle those rules with your own unique vision. After all, art is ultimately about breaking the rules.
However, if you wish to justify your convictions, you must first truly believe in them yourself. Only then can you begin the battle against the 'others.'
